Yes. We recommend that peer mediation training take place only after students have learned and begun using basic social competency skills to solve their own conflicts. This helps promote self-reliance and accountability. Should a particular conflict prove too difficult for two disputants to resolve on their own, they can use mediation, a structured process facilitated by a neutral third-party. While mediation provides a beneficial enhancement to the PEF model, mediation alone will not change a school’s climate or the overall social competency of the student body.
